Op één is a global documentary series made by Warner Bros, Belgium for the public broadcast network VRT. The film creates a beautiful contrast by travelling to Argentina, where meat consumption is the highest in the world. Returning for the second season, host Kobe explores why meat consumption is very less in India. According to the WHO, India has the lowest meat and beef consumption in the world. The film explores how cows are an integral part of Indian tradition and culture. Visiting a cow shelter, attending the famous cow festival, understanding the rituals, talking to cow vigilantes and people on the streets gives the film a very different perspective.
The 5-day schedule was filmed in New Delhi, Noida, Mathura and Vrindavan.
Beef is never an easy topic in India. Since there were several elements in the film, we had to approach the topic with utmost respect without offending any individual or organization.
We had a cow vigilante on-board, who agreed to have the film crew follow him while they were on night patrol.
While we are aware and, in this case, could foresee the risks involved, it was very challenging to make the client understand what appears smooth is not always rosy.
In the midst of all the action and excitement of getting the story right, you don’t realize what local conflicts are at play. Safety then becomes a concern. Thankfully we managed all that. Filming on a winter night on the secluded roads of rural India, we were all nerves. The women folk of crew were a nervous wreck when we realized the characters were carrying a weapon for protection because they could be under attack any time. Thankfully, our Production Head, who is quite experienced in handling such situations made sure there were no untoward incidents.
